Database of Medicinal Plants
& Other Substances

The main value of the database is that it associates common Quechua and Spanish names with the scientific name of the plants (genus, species, and family). Having access to the scientific names helps provide access to books, journals, and other resources that provide the pharmacological and common uses of those plants, including non-plant medicinal substances included in the database.

The spreadsheet for the Peru Medicinal Data is a very large HTML file (or spreadsheet file format XLS) consisting of 283 rows and 18 columns. When you click on the link to the database it will open as a new tab in your browser to the right side of this page showing the HTML spreadsheet. To return to this page in your browser, click the browser tab to the left of the spreadsheet tab. You will not want to attempt this on your phone as the HTML file is way too large.

Note that all the descriptor data for the spreadsheet columns is located in the top row only. As you scroll down through the rows, the descriptor data at the top will disappear. So, you may want to make note of the content descriptors in the top row for all 18 columns, from left to right. A way to keep track of this is to visit the database key. The key gives a list of the column header names plus a detailed description of the meaning of the column headers. Also, as you view the data you will need to scroll to the right to view the 10th through 18th columns. The actual number of visibile columns depends on the width of your computer screen. If the print appears too small, you can use the zoom function in your browser to enlarge the print.

The first 262 rows consist of plant data. The following 32 rows refer to non-plant data. The final rows, designated by alphabetical capital letters is a reference key to the sources cited in the rows above.

Note that the spreadsheet is copyrighted. You can view it and use it for your own use, but it may not be distributed in any manner without permission, or reference to this website at this time. That may change to a Creative Commons license after the book has been published.
